Red Snow, Warm Sands

The snow used to be clear. White. Clean-looking. Crisp, airy tufts that graced the landscape. Bunched together in a kind, soft array.

Before we got here, it wasn’t hard-packed.

Wasn’t disturbed.

And it most certainly wasn’t running with red.

Melody Beyond Imagination

There was a quiet song.

A lull in the void.

Static that, when focused, became edging. Drawing. Alluring. A song that gave promise to stars, and hope to blackholes. It punched through the continuum with gusto, displaying feasts and boasting of something sturdy on the edge of the horizon, something soft lurking at the very back of space itself. A river coaxing the fish out to something bigger, something better. A creek hidden in the foliage. A place to replenish when depleted.

There was a quiet song in the universe. One that I thought I heard only in my dreams.

But, that wasn’t so.

The song was real.

And it was beautiful.

It was loud.

And it was true to its word.

The song I followed into the universe…

It was you.

All along, there was only the one source. The one promise. Just the one.

It was you. Continue reading “Melody Beyond Imagination”

Man In The Clock

Tick, tock.

There’s a man in the clock.

The clock strikes one…

The man frowns.

Tick, tock.

Man in the clock.

The clock strikes two…

The man comes down.

And down.

And down.

Tick, tock.

Please.

Stop the man in the clock. Continue reading “Man In The Clock”

Sleeping Wishes

It wasn’t easy to get here.

The path is narrow, full of holes. Every step was marred—echoed, really—by the steps of the jungle beasts. By the creatures of this magical forest. I could hear their cries at night, and feel their eyes watching in the day. At some point, the trees gave up on me, gave in. Began reaching for me, choking up on the path ahead. Trying to prevent me from going forward.

Yes, it wasn’t easy getting here.

Not in the slightest.

But.

When the sleeper wakes…

It will be worth it.

Won’t it?

Wandering Star

I wandered.

Through the evergreens, across the frozen lakes, beyond the towering glaciers. I moved, endlessly onward. Pursuing only that wisp. That dream. An inkling that tickled at the back of my mind. Rode the tail of the Northern Lights. Disappeared in the dawn, leaving a faint memory.

This way.

I pursued.

I wandered.

Wandered, not aimlessly. Not at all.

But with a goal:

I will find it.

I will find you. Continue reading “Wandering Star”

Lost, But Not Found

“Did you see it?! Did you see?!”

“Yeah—”

“I knew it! I was right, wasn’t I? It’s a ghost, right? Right?”

Looking back at the house—the empty mansion that sat in between the clearing and the woods—I saw the eyes again. In the upper floor’s window, I saw the yellow eyes. The lingering feeling of something lost. Of something in need of being found.

I could not say what it was.

However:

“I don’t think it’s a ghost,” I said, crushing my friend’s hopes and dreams, quite coincidentally, really. “It doesn’t feel like a ghost.”

Ghosts don’t have that feeling of needing to be found, do they? When a ghost lingers, they linger for a reason. They aren’t lost, they don’t need to be found. They simply wish to be left to their own purposes. Left to fulfill their perceived duty.

They don’t look lost.

They don’t need to be found.

And they don’t look scared out of their whits.

Do they? Continue reading “Lost, But Not Found”

Burning Oceans and Scorching Seas

A blinding light that takes over the horizon. That singes the sky. Smoke tendrils curl upward, clawing at the night. Blotting out stars with its thick, angry grasp. With its red hues that dust the bottom of the skyline. That, when followed to its source, turn into something brighter. Something insistent.

Something more.

This is what we’ve avoided for so long. These burning seas and darkening skies. This lethargic smoke that curls slowly, cruelly, toward the heavens. Humans have steered clear of the edge of the world for so long. Have been afraid of it.

And this is why.

What can we do against seas of fire?

Against black angry skies?

What can we do with such light?

What can we do?

Is it worth it? Whatever lies beyond, is it something to be used? Something we’d want to find?

Who can we find in the throes of this hell? Continue reading “Burning Oceans and Scorching Seas”

Lost Passion

The world moves onward.

That’s what we know. If nothing else is certain, there is that one, tiny, constant.

The world moves onward.

There was a time when we ravaged the land. When we raided from the sky. When humans fought us with all their might, because of our inner fire. Because we…

We were other.

Not part of them.

There was a time when we soared. When we fought alongside the people. When we weighed mountains in hand and cast them aside, simply for the sake of making bridges. To give peace, or to bring prosperity. Humans praised us. Thanked us. Loved us dearly.

Both places exist in time.

As old as they are, they exist.

Both times exist.

Though not in this place.

Because this time is a different time. Separated from the previous. This time is the time that is in the future. The time that is forward.

This is the time in which the world has moved onward.

Forgotten.

But.

We have not forgotten.

We remember.

We move forward.

Churning

Rest will come soon.

It’s the only thing that keeps me going. Makes me able to take the next step, or any step at all, for that matter.

Soon.

The wind is chilly today. Biting from the back of its own throat. Gnawing at my sleeves, at my boots. Covering over my coat.

It burns my nose. Stings my eyes.

Good.

It just means that I’m still making it. That I’m not there yet.

I’m still alive. Continue reading “Churning”
